Our History

In 1924, W.P. Kearns moved from Vinton, Iowa to Waterloo to start a funeral home which still carries his name and tradition of excellence.  Working hand in hand with W.P. was his wife Sylvia Kearns; she is believed to carry the distinction of being the first licensed lady funeral director in Black Hawk County.

Robert L. Kearns followed in the footsteps of his parents.  Along with his wife Eleanor, they carried on the traditions set forth by the Kearns Family.

Garden View Chapel was built in 1981 and added to the Kearns Funeral Service locations.  The Garden View Chapel is located at 3655 Logan Avenue, adjacent to the Garden of Memories Cemetery.

In 1986, Daryl R. Schumacher and Dennis M. Huisman assumed ownership of the Kearns Funeral Service.  At the same time, they purchased ownership of the La Porte City Funeral Service, located at 606 Main Street.

In 1990, the Kearns Funeral Service moved into its current location at 3146 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo.  Following Dennis’ retirement in 2006 and Daryl’s retirement in 2013, the current staff of Kearns Funeral Service has continued on the path set forth by their predecessors.

Through the addition of staff and facilities, we feel we are able to fulfill your families’ wishes and needs.  Kearns Funeral Service is committed to providing trusted professional guidance.
