James R. Glaspie Sr., age 70, of Waterloo, died Thursday, April 6, 2017 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN of complications of heart surgery. 

He was born January 28, 1947 in Waterloo, the son of Boyd and Estella Vaughn Glaspie. 

James was a graduate of Waterloo East High School with the Class of 1965. 

He was united in marriage with Paulette Taylor on January 28, 1967 at the Salvation Army Chapel in Waterloo. 

James was a network construction technician for Qwest Communications, retiring after 43 years of service. He was a member of the Communications Workers of America and a volunteer for the Salvation Army. 

James was very involved with the Boy Scouts, having served as the Scoutmaster for Troop 11 and was the recipient of the National Silver Beaver Award. 

Survivors include his wife, Paulette of Waterloo; two sons, James R. (Jan) Glaspie, Jr. of Cedar Falls and Jeff Glaspie of Des Moines; a daughter, Jennifer Glaspie of Waterloo; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Steve Glaspie of Aplington, IA and Frank Hansel, Sr. of Greene, IA. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; a brother, Dave Hansel and a sister, Judy Hingtgen.

    I've known him only as grandpa for my whole life. Even though he wasn't my biological grandpa I was one of his very own. He made me laugh when I was sad. He would hold my hand when I was in need and every time I seen him he always had the biggest hug abd the biggest smile that was just for me! I will miss you so much grandpa!!

    I will miss him so much, he kept this family together, he would organize get togethers and keep in touch with us all, He will be missed by so many people, but especially his life partner and his family! We all love you and know that we want you to Rest in Peace.
