Biography

Joan M. Stabenow, 81, of Waterloo, died Thursday, November 12, 2020 at UnityPoint Health - Allen Hospital. She was born April 8, 1939 in Marion, the daughter of Ralph and Katherine (Berryhill) Pencil. She graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1957 and earned her LPN from Hawkeye Tech in 1969.

Joan married Dale D. Stabenow April 18, 1959 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She worked at Covenant Medical Center, formerly St. Francis Hospital, for 20 years as a surgical nurse, retiring in 1988. Nursing was one of Joanie’s proudest accomplishments and anyone that Joan could help out to an appointment or nurse back to health she did.

She was a member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church, Waterloo, and a member of the Red Hat Society. Joan also loved spending time with her family and traveling with them. She loved to travel anywhere and everywhere but Florida, Cozumel , and Branson were among her favorites.  She also loved a great family meal but most of all just time together was enough for her.

Joan is survived by: her husband; daughter, Lynn (Craig) Mohler of Oskaloosa; 2 grandchildren, Sarah (Chris) Hoy‚ Oskaloosa‚ and Brett (Bridgette) Mohler of Albia; great-grandson, Asher Mohler; 3 sisters, Bonnie Crowl of Waterloo‚ Janet Lynch of Cedar Falls‚ and Karen (Tony) Wahl of Shell Rock.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and son, Jeff Stabenow.

We are so sorry to hear of Joan's passing.  She always greeted us with a big smile and took the time to say Hi and visit a bit.  She will be greatly missed.  Gary remembers living across the street from the Pencil family on Mullan Ave.   Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Dale, We were recently in a phone conversation with Joni and telling her how much we missed seeing both of you. Joni sounded fine and we spoke about getting together soon on another outing, like out last get together in Dubuque. We were deeply saddened to hear the newest. Joan was a good person, a kind person, and someone who provided excellent care for sick hospitalized patients.  She and I often worked together, and I have great respect for Joan.  She had a “good heart” and I believe that she is probably now in Heaven, watching us as we attempt to emulate her goodness.

Years ago I met Joan’s son when he worked at Schoitz, but don’t recall meeting other family members.  Nevertheless, I want to express my sympathy because Joan’s demise is a great loss.

It was always a pleasure to see Joan and Dale when out and about. They were friendly and welcoming, regardless how long it had been since we had seen each other. Dale, I am so sorry for your loss.

Lynn, my deepest sympathy to you and your family.
