Jon D. DeSmidt, age 78, of Cedar Falls, died on April 14, 2017 at home following a brave battle with cancer.

Jon was born on May 26, 1938 in Humboldt, IA; the son of Everett and Greta (Hoag) DeSmidt. He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1956. Jon served in the U.S. Army from 1956 until his honorable discharge in 1958; and he then attended Gates Business College

Jon married Iva Louise Blosch on June 17, 1961 in Manchester.

He worked as an electrical technician at IPS/MidAmerican Energy for 35 years, retiring December 1995.

Jon was an active member at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Waterloo and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed camping, fishing, biking, canoeing, birdwatching, and traveling. Jon’s favorite thing was to spend time with his family.

Jon is survived by his wife, Iva; a son, Jeffrey Lynn DeSmidt of Des Moines; three daughters, Janice Louise (Salomon) Corella of Powder Springs, GA, Cheryl Ann (Robert) Knavel of Ennis, TX, and Sara Marie (William) Whaley of Roanoke, TX; seven grandchildren, Jacob Everett Knavel, Lindsay Marie Knavel, Brenden Michael Whaley, Erica Marie Whaley, Shawn Joseph Whaley, Daniel Andre Corella, Samuel Alejandro Corella; and a great-granddaughter, Faith Leighanne Knavel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Barbara Glenn Beck

    You all have my deepest sympathy we all loved him so much ..And he loved everyone .. 

    will always remember him singing and going camping loved all the song hes sing round the campfire... and all the trips we had .. from hiking in the badlands ..

    My deepest sympathy.  Jon was the nicest man.........and one could tell he loved 

    singing in the church choir.  Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.  I

    regret I won't be at the service as I am out of state but my thoughts will be with all

    of you.
