Burial at a later date in Milbank, South Dakota

Joyce Redman, 92, of Waterloo, died at UnityPoint Health—Allen Hospital on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, of natural causes.

She was born November 30, 1928, in Milbank, South Dakota, daughter of Arthur and Alma (Schweer) Redman. She graduated high school in Milbank; received degrees from Wartburg College in Waverly and Saint John’s University in Minnesota; and her Master of Arts degree in Education from Clarke College in Dubuque.

Ms. Redman was a teacher at Waterloo’s Hawthorne and Edison Elementary schools for 35 years, retiring in 1993. Prior to that, she taught at Bremwood Residential Campus in Waverly and Lutheran Youth Center in Wasilla, Alaska. Joyce loved a good book and gardening. She never married but was an avid traveler to Europe and enjoyed many trips with her companion late in life, Jerry Lien, who died in 2016.

She is survived by Jerry’s son, Brandon (Cathy) Lien and his sons, Jake and Austin, all of Cedar Falls. She is preceded by her brother, Jim Redman.

Elly Wilkes  Feb 13, 2021   i feel so bad  that i couldnt go visit Joyce during covid. I have known her for years as we went to First Lutheran Church. She was always so friendly and full of interesting information. She will be missed.

Joyce will be missed. She was sharp even at the end of her life. She would always tell me things even I forgot. I made weekly trips to the Waterloo Library for her because she read so fast. Joyce traveled to many places around the world and has many experiences teaching. She undoubtedly touched many students lives.

Joyce holds a special place in the heart. She was like family. She was such a dedicated friend and companion to my dad (Jerry) and am so grateful for the wonderful memories of your trips with my dad to St. Paul and coming to visit in Munich. Jerry really got into the German spirit with his "kaffee klatch" conversations on your porch!  Guten Tag was his favorite greeting, either on the phone or opening the door, even if you couldn't understand what he was saying! Your wanderlust curiosity about Norway and Germany rubbed off on my dad and am grateful to you for taking those trips with him.  And the books.....cannot believe how many books you could read in a week!  There are a lot of people out there who can read because of you!

I was surprised and saddened to see the picture in the newspaper of my 4th grade teacher Miss Redman.  I have very fond memories of her classes and her personality.  My family lived next door to her on Vine St. in Waterloo for a few years also.  I have often thought about her over the years.
