Mary and her late husband, Gerry, were good friends. When I was growing up in Rockford, Illinois, she and Gerry would visit us occasionally. They were always a lot of fun. Although they never had children of their own, they always enjoyed hosting exchange students and had an obvious love for children and young people. After I grew up, I would visit them from time to time in their home in Waterloo and later, at Friendship Village, after they sold their home. Gerry's passing, some 8 years ago, was a difficult time for Mary, and also for me and those who loved them both. I have tried to stay in touch with Mary over the years since then and always enjoyed our telephone conversations. I like to think -- and I hope -- that she and Gerry are now together again, having passed from this life into the next.
