Memorials may be directed to the family at 703 Easton Avenue, Waterloo, Iowa 50702. Biography Vornese Givhan departed this earthly life on Wednesday, September 19, at Pinnacle Specialty Care in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was born on December 16, 1935, in Shannon, Mississippi to Ezekiel Givhan and wife Nancy D. Wood. Vornese graduated from Shannon High School in Shannon, Mississippi, and then worked as a beautician. In the late 1950’s, she moved to Waterloo, Iowa, to join her sister, Charlie Mae Lee, and brother, Lester Givhan. There she professed Jesus Christ as her Savior and became a long-time member of Antioch Baptist Church. Vornese worked in catering and also as a laborer at Chamberlain Machine Works until the facility closed in 1990. Before her health declined, she worked as a senior companion with several seniors in this community. Cooking was one of her passions and she enjoyed treating her friends and family members to her delicious sweet potato pie, caramel cake, and mixed peas with okra, just to name a few specialties. Vornese loved her family and her family loved her. She enjoyed long phone calls to share family news, reunions, get togethers, and caring for family members who were sick. She was truly a nurturing person. During these last nine years with dementia and Alzheimer’s, her precious “Denny” (cousin Dennis Reed) was her primary advocate, her spiritual guide, and her nurturer. Vornese is survived by her brother, DeLoys Givhan of Shannon, Mississippi; close cousins, Ickey Buchanan, Lee Dennis Reed, Olabelle Reed, James Reed, and Helen Robinson, all of Waterloo; special friend Willa Mae Wright of Waterloo; goddaughter Yolanda Davis of Waterloo; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins throughout the United States. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Charlie Mae Lee; and four brothers: Clyde, Lester, John, and Floyd Givhan. Click here to send a private message to the family. Whenever I would see her I would say hello, and we would always catch up with one another's activities. Ms. Givhens was a beautiful lady, and a AWESOME cook. I ate dinner at her home many times. I remember that Shelia loved when she would green peas. My prayers are with your family. That God would Grant you the peace that surpasses all understanding.
